Thor Energy Advances Natural Hydrogen Exploration at South Australia's HY-Range Project

May 30, 2025 By Tami Hood High trust 7.0/10

Thor Energy advances hydrogen and helium exploration in South Australia, completing a 103-site geochem survey using real-time gas chromatography. Results expected June 2025.

Thor Energy plc is making big moves in Australia’s fast-emerging natural hydrogen scene. Back in May 2025, the UK-based explorer carried out a deep-dive geochemical survey at its HY-Range project (license RSEL 802) in South Australia—an area that’s starting to turn heads for its clean energy potential.

Real-Time Data from the Dirt: Soil Testing Goes High-Tech

Teaming up with SGS Australia and CSI Australia, Thor brought in high-tech mobile gas chromatography units and hit 103 soil sampling sites across the region. The aim was to get a clear read on natural hydrogen and helium concentrations—and how they’re moving underground—using field-based, lab-quality tech. This real-time approach is a major step up from older, slower methods. It helps the team quickly adjust to what they find on the ground and make better calls, faster.

Not stopping there, Thor cranked up efforts by launching a smart step-out sampling strategy, extending beyond the original sampling zone. That kind of bold move signals real confidence in what they're seeing underground.

Digging In: Hydrogen's Ground Floor Opportunity

South Australia has a long history with resource exploration, but when it comes to hydrogen production—especially natural (or “white”) hydrogen—it’s still early innings. Only a few exploration licenses are out there, and Thor’s HY-Range project is right in the middle of a growing hot spot. Neighboring sites have already turned up positive signs, so Thor’s in a decent spot to ride that momentum—but yeah, we're still in the early days.

Thor’s February 2025 acquisition of Go Exploration plays right into this vision. The deal—an 80.2% stake in the local company—adds another hydrogen and helium license to Thor’s belt (specifically, PEL 120 in South Australia), putting them in a strong position to lead the charge in sourcing naturally occurring hydrogen and helium—two key pieces in the global sustainable energy and industrial decarbonization puzzle.

Why It Matters: Energy Security and a Clean Future

So, why should anyone outside the exploration world care? Because this kind of work could feed directly into the bigger picture on energy. Natural hydrogen could offer a low-impact, zero-emission energy source—especially as a complement to electrolytic hydrogen—making it a potential game-changer at industrial and grid scales. And don’t forget helium: it's in short supply globally, yet critical for everything from MRI machines to advanced tech manufacturing.

If Thor’s HY-Range project proves out, it won’t just be a win for the company—it could bring real value to South Australia’s growing hydrogen infrastructure. Plus, it could bring in new jobs, tech investment, and infrastructure, provided it all goes hand-in-hand with solid environmental stewardship.

What’s Next: Results on the Horizon

All eyes are now on the lab. Results from the HY-Range sampling campaign are expected in June 2025. Depending on what those numbers show, we might see Thor moving quickly from the exploration phase into hands-on resource development—and maybe even fast-tracking the region as a serious player in clean hydrogen.

Bottom line? This is shaping up to be a key moment—not just for Thor, but for South Australia’s evolution from traditional resource hub to forward-looking zero-emission technology and clean energy leader. HY-Range could end up tipping the scales.
