ARENA Backs Hadean Energy's Groundbreaking Hydrogen Pilot in Victoria
Research

This month, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced a significant funding commitment of AUD 15 million to Hadean Energy for the development of a AUD 30 million hydrogen production pilot in Hastings, Victoria. This project, which uses Australia’s newly developed tubular solid oxide electrolysis technology, aims to produce renewable hydrogen for use in industrial steel-manufacturing processes.

Technology Overview and Objectives

The pilot plant is expected to operate at an electrical capacity of between 200–300 kW, generating up to 7 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. Notably, it aims to provide around 85% of the hydrogen necessary for a targeted steel annealing process, a critical step in steel production that improves the metal's properties.

This innovative technology was developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) after more than eight years of research. The electrolyser operates at approximately 800°C, utilizing not only electrical energy but also steam and heat from industrial processes. According to CSIRO, this configuration can decrease electricity consumption by up to 30% compared to traditional low-temperature electrolysis systems. By tapping into available industrial waste heat, such as steam, the electrolyser enhances the feasibility of producing hydrogen with lower emissions.

The Project’s Significance

The project is crucial as it directly addresses the challenges of decarbonizing the steelmaking industry, a sector recognized as particularly difficult to transition away from fossil fuels. Agreement on the hydrogen’s end-use indicates the pilot not only contributes to renewable hydrogen production but will also directly impact emissions in steel production.

This pilot builds on earlier trials conducted at BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla Steelworks where CSIRO's technology operated for 1,000 hours, utilizing steam generated by the steelmaking process. This prior trial confirmed the technology’s efficiency and durability in an industrial setting, with electrical inputs reported to be below 36 kWh per kilogram of hydrogen.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Aspirations

This initiative illustrates a collaborative approach in advancing clean technology in Australia, with Hadean Energy being co-founded by CSIRO and RFC Ambrian, a corporate adviser with expertise in technology and resource sectors. While Hadean Energy will develop and operate the new pilot project, the enterprise has explicitly clarified that it does not seek to handle hydrogen production ownership or operations directly at the BOC production site in Hastings, which serves as the confirmed host location.

Future of Hydrogen in Australia

ARENA’s support is indicative of Australia’s broader commitment to reducing emissions through innovation in green hydrogen production. The Australian government has pursued hydrogen as a major component of its decarbonization strategy since at least 2018, initially focusing on research and smaller pilots, later progressing to more significant demonstrations and projects like this one.

Successful execution and validation of this pilot could significantly influence the perception and adoption of hydrogen within industrial applications, possibly leading to a larger scale rollout in sectors such as steel, chemicals, and heavy transport. However, critical challenges regarding economic viability, scaling capacity, and the integration of high-temperature electrolyser technology require further validation.

In summary, this pilot project aligns with Australia’s National Hydrogen Strategy, reinforcing its advancements in low-emission technologies while paving the way for potential future exports. As the project remains contingent upon final approvals and deployment arrangements, it could potentially establish a new paradigm for renewable hydrogen's role in the industrial landscape.
