US energy parks to get hydrogen and carbon capture technology from Nu:ionic and RW Energy

The companies are seeking to enhance the locations with H2 production and CO2 mitigation

Nu:ionic Technology and RW Energy have announced their plans for the enhancement of energy parks using hydrogen production in combination with carbon capture technology.

The companies have signed an MoU for the project

Nu:ionic and RW Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to partner on hydrogen production and carbon capture technology. Its focus was on a combination of the Teal Hydrogen production equipment provided by Nu:ionic. That equipment is used for the production of high-purity H2 as well as a carbon dioxide byproduct in the form of an industrial grade cryogenic liquid.  That latter product can be transported for utilization or sequestration.  The goal is to support the cleaner production of hydrogen which can then be used with low- or zero-emissions.

Carbon capture technology to clean up hydrogen production

Once the hydrogen production and carbon capture technology has been installed, it will support producing between 1.2 tons and 6 tons of H2 per day on the site. There are a number of locations that are expected to benefit from the additions to these energy parks and the low-CO2 enhancements. Among them are expected to include the Gulf Coast of Texas, Northern California, and Ohio.  It is believed that the enhancements to the various sites will come online at the end of next year.

The method will use methane but emissions will be mitigated

“The use of Nu:ionic’s technology enables RW Energy to integrate renewable resources into methane-based hydrogen production and offers a cost-effective and near-term pathway to low-carbon energy solutions,” said RW Energy CEO Darin Knicely. The technology Nu:ionic will be supplying within the deal laid out in the MoU will place the spotlight on the company’s Nu-X Smart ReformerSM, which is an electrified natural gas or renewable raw biogas reforming compact unit. While this does mean that methane will be used as a result of the application of biogas as well as because it will be combined with the fossil fuel natural gas, the combustion source will be electrified in order to be able to call the H2 that results of the production a low-CO2 form due to the carbon capture technology.  The goal is to be able to accomplish this goal while being able to offer the product at a competitive market price.  Whether this will be the result has yet to be seen, but time will be the great decider.
