The World Bank is backing a global program that is designed to study and determine the wind energy potential in countries throughout the world. The program has begun to focus its efforts on African countries, which have begun showing strong support for wind power. The project, called the Energy Sector Management Assessment Program, could help wind energy take form in Africa. The project began its first stage in 2014, with this first stage reaching completion earlier this year. During the first stage of the project, DNV completed its preliminary investigation of wind flows in several regions. The organization found promise in the wind flows that it discovered and now plans to provide education opportunities for those interested in the development of wind power systems.DNV will be aiding in the collection of wind data
The second stage of the project will see DNV training professionals to establish and maintain wind masts. These masts will collect data concerning wind energy and its ability to produce reliable electrical power. This particular stage of the project will take place over two years. The final stage of the project will involve the creation of a validated meso-micro wind atlas, which will be used to determine what the best locations are for wind energy systems.
