Renewable ammonia synthesis at Yanbu involves converting green hydrogen into ammonia (NH3) using nitrogen sourced from air, with the overall process powered by renewable electricity so that the resulting product can qualify as renewable or RFNBO‑compliant ammonia for export. The ammonia functions as both a fertilizer feedstock and as an energy carrier that can be transported in large quantities and later used directly as fuel or decomposed back into hydrogen.

The traditional industrial method for synthesizing ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen, which is known for its high energy consumption and significant carbon footprint.
