Natural (geologic) hydrogen exploration
Natural or geologic hydrogen exploration refers to the set of geological, geophysical, and geochemical methods used to detect, map, and characterize accumulations of molecular hydrogen generated in the subsurface by natural processes such as water–rock reactions, radiolysis, or mantle degassing. Instead of producing hydrogen artificially via electrolysis or reforming, exploration targets pre-existing hydrogen trapped in porous rocks or faults, similar to the way oil and gas fields are discovered.
