Hydrogen appliance testing protocols are structured experimental procedures and standards used to evaluate how appliances such as boilers, furnaces, water heaters, and cookers perform when operating on hydrogen-enriched natural gas or pure hydrogen.[3][6][7] These protocols cover safety, combustion characteristics, efficiency, emissions, and durability, and are often developed within international research programs, standards organizations, and collaborative projects between universities, utilities, and industry.[7]

Hydrogen-enriched natural gas (HENG) refers to mixtures where a portion of conventional natural gas in pipelines is replaced with hydrogen, with the goal of reducing the carbon intensity of the delivered fuel while using much of the existing gas infrastructure and end-use appliances.[9] Typical blending levels discussed in technical and policy literature range up to about 20% hydrogen by volume in distribution systems, where studies suggest that explosion risk and other safety parameters may remain comparable to current gas use if properly managed.
