A nature-inspired catalyst mechanism developed by Canadelectrochim that mimics the self-cleaning properties of plant leaves using microscale and nanoscale surface structures to enable oxygen reduction without platinum.

Platinum particles on porous carbon supports used to catalyze both hydrogen oxidation at the anode and oxygen reduction at the cathode in PEMFC. Currently the most effective catalyst but prohibitively expensive for commercialization.

A single-ion conducting polymer electrolyte discovered by DuPont that selectively permits only hydrogen ions (protons) to migrate between anode and cathode while blocking electrons, preventing short-circuiting.
